I have worked on many Toshiba dvd/vcr combo, the vcr part always fail, but they are very easy to work on as most combo from that era are rebranded FUNAI. All they need is cleaning the dirty mode switch or replacing a burned laser emitter, re-greasing the whole mechanism and cleaning the video head.

Looking at the service manual, the micon sends RGB to the jungle chip for the OSD. assuming it's analog at regular voltage, an RGB mod should be possible.

Nice little combo TV from Toshiba! It would be great if one day you have the opportunity to check out what some believe are the kings of Toshiba SD CRT TVs: The AF41, AF42, AF61 or AF62 series. Either in 27”, 32” or 36”. Or the AF43 in either 32” or 36”. Since all those have japanese Toshiba tubes, and not Orion tubes.

I have the 24" version of this TV and run everything in RGB to Component via a Retrotink and it looks fantastic. I usually play most of my MVS titles through it. I would love to have it recapped at some point and cleaned up. Thanks for the great video !

Crazy, I just picked one of these up about a week ago. Mine is a cheaper version without the card slot though. I spotted it sitting on the curb while working and went and nabbed it on my way home.

57 British female and myocarditis survivor....was fit,not over weight, vegetarian, non smokers...1 small glass of wine at a weekend...never ever thought this could happen to me. Had the Moderna vaccines when first issued then the Pfizer booster.....could it be these vaccines that have caused this harm to my body...who knows....but my sympathy goes out to all those who have lost loved ones and to those survivors like me who have to live the rest of their lives knowing they will never be who they once were x

I wonder what that media card input supports, if it has any video playback options. If anything you could load up 240p test patterns on a card and display them I guess?

Oh wow! I remember being really tempted to buy one of these units in Kmart and it was offered at a reasonable price Steve. Some reason, I passed on the offer. I don't recall why, but I think I had to buy books for school that was distracting me to avoid purchasing it. Oh well, live and learn. 8^) Anthony..

I have a rebadged version of this set, an Orion 21FVD. The great thing about this model is it has an RGB scart socket, making it a great all-in-one TV for gaming and movies.

I had the 2004 version without the SD card slot bought brand new in 2004 when I got it as a birthday gift. I used it SO heavily. one of the things I did was record UA-cam videos onto VHS using the Wii internet browser back in the day. It developed the same aforementioned issues with the VCR no longer accepting tapes and the DVD tray acting weird. Mine also got the dreaded retrace lines on the screen after a few years...

My friend bought this TV off FB market and the VCR accept a tape but doesnt play and the DVD tray won't open. It also only turns on once right after it is plugged in but if you turn it off it won't turn back on. You have to unplug it and plug it back in. I'm going to crack it open for him and see what is wrong. I am expecting a gear or belt to be bad on the VCR and a belt on the DVD tray. TV I'm not sure but maybe a capacitor or voltage regulator on the psu.

I have the 2004 version without the card slot. Did your vhs / dvd player work? My vhs cannot play back tapes well and the dvd drive doesn't read discs. I tried cleaning the vhs heads but that didn't help much, still has massive tracking issues. Does the entire tray slide out that hold the dvd and vhs decks? Great video!

If it doesn't do S-Video, can you really call it a great VHS combo?

I have a similar crt but with a USB port instead of a memory card slot. Love this thing, i just wish i knew someone that can help with the geometry being somewhat off. It is a little better with the remote. Using the software service menus is far more doable with the remote, and its quicker to switch between menus, but other than that i haven’t been in a situation where i would need more features to find and the service menus don’t do enough alone to adjust the picture geometry to my liking.

Love the fact that you used a cky2k to test the DVD player lol. Also a pretty awsome and unique TV! I just got myself gifted a B&O mx5000 us version with remote which I will be trying to tear into myself.

I feel like there are still so many crazy CRT TV’s to discover. I recently discovered a Panasonic Quintrix ACUITY model that is crazy and maybe the best I have ever seen.

You asked in a previous video whether this set could be RGB mux moddable. I absolutely think it can be. Search for 'OSD_R' in the service manual, and you will see the IC101 chip has RGB and blank inputs. Also search for R159, R160 and R164 in the service manual, these should be the resistors you may need to remove. You should do a continuity test from these resistors to the IC101 chip to confirm.

I just got the Sony FD 500 cheap off eBay and I think the first Mega Watchman from 1989. It was listed with just the radio working and the tv when turned on had just a blue center line. It came with an after market ac/dc cord and when turning it on with that, the radio came on fine, but the tv just had a line as the seller stated. Then I happened to have the right shape cord that fit and when I plugged it in , the tv turned on to show static vs just a thin line as before. So it seems like that port/plug was for travel use to just use the radio or not the correct voltage adapter? I don’t know and all i know is that it works with the main cord and not the adapter. I’m older and loved all Sony stuff and had many Sony stuff since the 80’s. So for me I love re living my youth and now you can get these older items for a fraction of what they cost when they were new. The only thing that’s bad design is the handle and how it mostly make the whole tv tilt one way. I think with the next model FD -510 they changed it to like the luggage handle style and slide up on the back. So most ppl. will say these don’t work bc the tv won’t get channels, but they’re actually still working if you get static and the tv turns on. So meaning you can get these for cheap and if you buy from eBay, the shipping is what can be costly. Still haven’t tried with batteries and I’m wondering if the tv will work. I’m also glad many are getting into collecting these vintage electronics and saving these units from being dumped. I’m sure for a few decades, many of these were ending up in landfills bc either they were worth fixing or they became obsolete. I think even of you didn’t used them and just to display them can be very cool. Anyway, thanks for making this video and keep it up!

Any pvm-4300s still around?

I have one of these that I badly want to fix. It has a very odd issue with horizontal stripes and squashed picture that gradually stretches out to normal and the lines slowly fade away. Then aside from that it has god awful line straightness. Vertical lines are noticeably jagged at several places. I know it can be a good set for my humble little retro corner I just need to get it healthy again.

That RRP was surprising affordable

The MSRP price even in 2024 standard got you OLED like picture quality. Now you have to spend 5x more for an OLED TV which can rival a picture quality of a CRT yet can’t do composite, s-video, and even component. Input lag still awful, motion blur still there, and you can’t still properly scale 240P to look just as sharp (low resolution will look bad on oled but not on crt). Oh for $450 you might be getting a Chinese made TCL or Hisense (more like Lowsense) LED TV. It’s so bad that my Toshiba CRT look far better than those LED TV in fact it better than QLED and mini LED and OLED in motions and scaling.

I have the 24” version of this T.V. It marked my return to owning a CRT set since I left them behind in 2011. Back then, I owned a Magnavox tube with RCA out. Played a lot of N64 and Xbox on it. I have to say, I was blown away at the quality of this Sony set. It caused me to seek out another, bigger set. While I still have this set, much to the dismay of my wife, I located a 36” 2001 KV-36FS13 which is my main set. I love the component hook-up to my vintage Onkyo 2.1 speaker setup. It’s my old-skool rig and I love it.

I love my 78cm Mitsubishi Black Diamond DIVA CRT from 1995. It’s amazing.

I have the 24 inch with s video. I found it for 40 bucks in my town. I dont own any testing suite *yet so I hope to fix the slight bend on the right side of the picture using the service mode

Does anyone know a matching paint/marker color for the dark bezel of the PVM-20M2MDE (20M2MDU)? I have already tried the Marabu YONO Marker Pen 12400103079, Dark Grey 079, which is too dark, and the Marabu YONO Marker Pen 12400103078, Grey 078, which is too light. BTW, I have read that Holts HGREY01 is a match for the light gray PVM metal casing. (Source: "Got my Sony PVM painted and cleaned up." @ r/crtgaming)
